The donation of blood, organs and tissue is a great act of generosity. Often it can save lives and cure diseases but it also can improve the quality of life of many ill people or people who undergo reconstructive surgery.
In orthopaedic surgery, orthodontics, maxillofacial surgery, otoneurosurgery and reconstructive surgery in bone tumours, the musculoskeletal tissue is applied to reintegrate missing parts.
The donor’s tissue does not get rejected once implanted in the recipient and it is slowly integrated, speeding up the healing process.
The criteria for donation are outlined in an ad hoc legislation.
The guidelines are the “Minimum organisational, structural and technological requirements for Tissue Institutions for the safety and quality in the donation, procurement, control, processing, conservation, banking and distribution of human tissues and cells” (Agreement for the State-Regions Conference March 8th, 2018).
